Readers of a certain age may remember an exercise from their school days known as “diagramming sentences.” The grammatical equivalent of dissecting a frog, the exercise was designed to foster understanding of the various parts of speech. Students labored mightily to produce a graphic representation of a sentence, with the end result sprouting legs that shot off in unexpected directions. The May 2010 issue of Farm Collector was rather like that for me. I like to think, as we begin work on any given issue, that my hands are firmly on the steering wheel and I know where we’re going. But each day – and each issue – has its own surprises.

Even in these frigid temperatures, our old iron hasn’t been forgotten in its hibernation. On Christmas morning, my husband had our WD-45 Allis-Chalmers busting drifts in our driveway. It was my dad’s tractor and has an old homemade blade on the front. The ice under the snow in one spot won out over the tractor tires and the Allis wasn’t going anywhere, so my husband fired up the Case 600 and hooked up both tractors to the chains.

Days grow short; the air is full of flurries. Planted firmly on the wrong side of Thanksgiving, I consider the final page of the wall calendar and wonder, as even prehistoric man must have as he eyed hatch marks on the cave wall, “Where did another year go?” Nestled in between the holiday hubbub and the dreaded New Year’s resolutions is one of my favorite times of year: the sweet season of remembrance. I like to take stock of everything that’s transpired in the past year, remember the activities of each month and season. What worked? What didn’t? What could do with a bit of tweaking?

It’s easy to think you’ve seen it all before … easy, that is, until you pick up the December 2009 issue of Farm Collector. As I survey the contents, my first reaction is like that of the elderly friend I remember from childhood. On hearing something that surprised or shocked, she exclaimed, “Well, I never,” signaling both wonderment and a sudden shortage of words.

As you read this, kids across the country are settling back into familiar classroom routines. Familiar to them, that is: not so familiar to those of us years separated from lessons in readin’, ’ritin’ and ’rithmatic – and totally alien to those who lived in the era when what we think of as old iron was new.

This exam was taken from an original 1895 document on file at the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society & Library in Salina, Kan., and reprinted by the Salina Journal. There is some debate as to whether it was administered to eighth graders as a final examination or to potential teachers.

Steam traction engines on TV? Could be, at least if the desires of an independent British programming company come to fruition. I've been approached before by would-be TV producers expressing interest in building a show around the subject of old farm equipment, but the few who have contacted me in years past seemed intent on trying to apply the sort of story line used in popular shows like Jesse James' "Monster Garage" to vintage farm equipment. Not much of a fit, if you ask me.
