The Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Assn. Swap Meet & Flea Market has to be one of the biggest swap meets around in this hobby. The 33rd annual swap meet was held April 23-25, 2010, east of Le Sueur, Minn., at the show grounds.

At the Florida Flywheelers swap meet, I came across an unusual tractor called the Chev-All, the creation of David Radius, Kissimmee, Fla. Actually, it was a homemade tractor using an F-12 Farmall rear end and a 6-cylinder Chevrolet in-line overhead valve engine.
David is quite a tinkerer and it got me to thinking about some of our great tinkerers in the history of agriculture.

The 45th National Farm Machinery Show (NFMS) in Louisville, Ky., was held Feb. 10-13, 2010. You need your map handy when you are navigating the aisles and halls of the Kentucky Exposition Center, where the show is held.
Indoors, it covers 27 acres! I think the shoe companies have to profit from shows like this too! My strategy was to weave through the sea of visitors carrying goodies in their bags and to dodge the occasional yardsticks tapping a trail, as I made my way from one end to the other.

I just returned from the New York State Two-Cylinder Expo IX held July 9-11, 2009, in Canandaigua, N.Y. This Kansas farm girl found New York to be a friendly place to visit, despite the Dorothy jokes – which just goes to show, the tractor and engine enthusiasts are the nicest bunch of folks, wherever you go. And what a beautiful setting for a show!

For the thousands who attend antique farm equipment shows each summer, it’s all about fun. But for a volunteer, it’s a good deal closer to work. The Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, is a classic example. A small army of volunteers take tickets, man equipment, operate transportation systems, direct traffic, answer questions, sell buttons and manage exhibits. Working in weather that can range from typhoon to inferno, volunteers put in long hours to make the show a success. For the workers, it’s no small irony that the show ends on Labor Day. But there’s also no mistaking that – for the dedicated volunteer – working at a show is a labor of love.
