Recalling a 1920s Road Grader

Article Tools

Here is a photo of an old-time road grader in about 1923. This rig belonged to my grandpa, N.C. Nelson (at left) of Eureka Center in Polk County, Wis. His youngest daughter, Elnora, 4, is perched on the seat. Country roads during that era were mostly gravel. A road grader was needed to level out ruts that were made after a rain.
