Letters: 120 bushels a day – by hand

A 1950s newspaper article shows an impressive husker

"HUSK BY MACHINE? SHUCKS NO! – Charles Ford, 74-year-old farmer of McCune, Kan., scorns those new-fangled corn huskers. Ford picks and husks his corn by hand – has done it since he was 10 – and claims he can gather 120 bushels in a day."

After reading the nice article on “Battle of the Bangboard” (Farm Collector, January 2011), I ran into this picture in the Oct. 23, 1950 edition of the Michigan City (Ind.) News Dispatch about cornhusking. How about that? 120 bushels a day by hand.
