Fairbanks-Morse Type Y Diesel Engine For Sale

The cover of the February/March 2011 issue of Gas Engine Magazine features a circa-1925 illustration of a Fairbanks-Morse Type Y Diesel engine. I'm a sucker for vintage advertisments and scenes featuring gas engines so, for me, this image was a no-brainer for the cover. We found some information about the engine through C.H. Wendel but lost the contact information for the person who sent us the ad long ago.

I wasn't the only one who thought this image was a good choice for the cover because we received several complimentary comments from readers as soon as it arrived in subscribers hands. The most interesting comment, though, was an anonymous tip from California that a complete example of the engine pictured was for sale in Stevenson, Calif.!

According to the tipster, the engine is permanently mounted to a semi-trailer and is bigger than you can imagine. It belonged to well-known West Coast large engine collector Otis Hardy, who has passed away, and is being sold by his wife Kathy Hardy. The tipster didn’t have any contact information for Kathy but did note that Stevenson is a very small town south of Sacramento and north of Los Banos. The tipster seemed keen on offering hints for its location rather than specific details, citing a penchant for gas engine adventures.

If you’re interested in adding this massive piece of old iron history to your collection, it doesn’t sound like it will be too hard to find.

I wasn't able to find video of a 6-cylinder Type Y like the one in the advertisement, but here's a video of a related F-M Type Y 3-cylinder semi-diesel. Just picture an engine twice this size and you'll have an idea of what we're talking about:

Quoting price might be nice. No need for an interested party going farther unless he thinks he can afford it.
