The overshot waterwheel at Gelli Newydd was installed in the 1940s after the original all-wood wheel rotted away. Water is something we have plenty of in Wales. In the old days, we certainly made use of the resources around us: On a short stretch of the nearby Crafnant River there were once at least six commercial watermills. Today there is just one: the Trefriw Woolen Mill, which is powered by a water turbine.
