A 1909 Famous vertical engine is the heart of an Indiana collection

This 1909 Famous vertical is screen-cooled. Water is pumped out of the bottom of the tank, up through the head, out through a pipe and over the screen, where the water is cooled before it returns to the tank. The engine’s gasoline pipes and brass check valves are original.
Built in 1918, this 1-1/2 hp Alamo was used to run a vacuum pump for a milking machine. Models like this one (with the milker pulley) are rare, Jim says.
Mounted on a walnut cart, this 1913 2-1/2 hp United is Jim’s favorite engine. The open flywheel engine has no magneto: It runs with battery and coil.

This 1918 6 hp International Type M with kerosene carburetor has an International magneto. The engine was originally used to power a buzz saw but the magneto gear broke early on. The engine was disassembled but never repaired or used: The cylinder shows no wear.
Built in 1928, this 1-1/2 hp John Deere probably ran a corn sheller or water pump. Spiral cuts in the engine’s babbitt bearings allowed a small amount of oil to run continuously from each bearing.

This rare Novo Model 2E has been at home in Jim and Becky’s kitchen for the last 14 years. Jim believes it to be an experimental model developed in an attempt to get 2 hp out of a 1-1/2 hp frame. Jim restored the engine and retired it: It has not been run since.
