Incorrect captions in Farm Collector August 2009

The Sam Moore article on binder work in the August 2009 issue of Farm Collector (“One Great Step Forward: Binders”) was of interest and has Mr. Moore’s usual factual accuracy. There were, however, some incorrect photo captions.

The caption on the photo depicting a McCormick reaper operating in Holland is inaccurate. No doubt the source (The American Thresherman, May 1925) contained the original incorrect information.

This photo was taken by International Harvester in 1909 on a farm just west of Chicago and it is of a replica of the original 1831 McCormick reaper (not a totally accurate replication as it turns out). A series of photographs were taken at the same location and at the same time showing the reaper replica in different working configurations. The photo in question, sometimes altered to remove the windmill, can be found in a number of books and publications of the era. These photos are a part of the McCormick International Harvester Collection archives located at the Wisconsin Historical society in Madison, Wis.

The captions for the two photos on page 14 of the same article are reversed; the left photo is of a binder and the lower photo is of the self-raking reaper.
