It’s never too late to take up a new hobby. So this year, why not try steam? Nine organizations will hold steam schools in 2012, so whether you’re new to the hobby, or just want to stay on top of your game, one of these schools will definitely fit the bill.

The courses are taught by experienced steam engineers and focus on safety, operation and maintenance through classroom instruction and hands-on experience. Registration is required, and make sure to register early as classes fill up quickly. And why wouldn’t they? Operating a historic steam traction engine, taking in the sights and smells at a beautiful club’s grounds – there’s no better way to experience old iron than this.
Illinois
12th Annual Central States Thresherman’s Reunion Steam School
When: May 12-13
Where: Thresherman’s Reunion Park, Pontiac
Tuition: $50 ($40 for additional family members)
The course is designed for beginning and intermediate engineers, with an emphasis on safe engine operation. Camping, coffee, donuts and lunch both days are included. Class size is limited to 50.

Midwest Old Threshers Reunion Steam School
When: May 5-6
Where: Midwest Old Threshers show grounds, Mt. Pleasant
Tuition: $50
The course stresses classroom and hands-on experience. Materials and two noon meals are included.
