This old farm tool's arched piece measures about 11 inches wide. The chains are 8 inches long. It appears to be hand-forged.

It's almost undoubtedly a gambrel stick. Cut slits behind the hamstrings of a hog, stick the bars on the end of the chain through and haul the pig up tail first. http://img0.etsystatic.com/003/0/5420926/il_fullxfull.396955468_omqq.jpg
