The Massey-Harris General Purpose was among the first successful four-wheel drive tractors
Arlen Salmela’s 1931 Massey-Harris GP tractor. The GP was an early leader in four-wheel drive technology.

Company promotional materials claimed the 8-foot GP could be turned within a 6-foot circle. After Arlen removed (and saved) the V-shaped lugs from the GP’s wheels, he bolted on recap tread from a 100-20 truck tire so he could drive it on paved surfaces.
The GP was compact, easy to work on and steered easily, but was not powerful enough to run most threshing machines.
