Letters to the Editor

My husband, Kenneth, and I restored this 1941 Farmall A (top
photo). This tractor is the symbol of survival for us in the wake
of the death of our boys.

It all started when my uncle, F.L. Stein (Uncle Pete), bought
the tractor and taught me how to drive when I was 7 years old. It
was the “4-wheeler” of our times. My brother and I loved to take
turns with Uncle Pete every afternoon. Before Pete died in January
2004, he gave the tractor to me to restore. We finished restoring
it in September 2004. That was the start of the healing process for
us, as we earlier lost both of our sons: Jeffrey in January 2000,
and Cody in February 2004.

Kenneth now has a 1938 Allis-Chalmers B tractor. He bought it in
November 2005 to restore. The healing process continues with this
tractor. We have been many miles showing off our tractors. We know
that Uncle Pete, Jeffrey and Cody are with us all the way. We have
won many honors and met many wonderful people along the way. We
hope to see many of our new friends down the road at antique
tractor shows in the future.

We just bought a 1946 Farmall B to add to our collection. We now
know restoring antique tractor will help heal our broken
