Enclosed is a photo of a header barge in use during harvesting (see Farm Collector, March 2008, page 6). The grain was cut and elevated onto the barge. A canvas conveyor moved the grain. It was then taken to the threshing machine or put in stacks to be threshed at a later date.
My uncle in North Dakota told me he just hated these machines because they were too hard for the horses to operate. Some horses were terrified by the machine ahead of them. All other horse-drawn equipment was pulled behind and they couldn’t see them.
