The past meets the future at this year's Midwest Old Threshers Reunion Sept. 3-7 in Mt, Pleasant Iowa. "We're really stressing a theme of 'Bring the Kids - Share the Memories,'''said Lennis Moore, administrator of the Midwest Old Threshers. "We really want to get the kids involved at an earlier age."
As an incentive, children age 14 and under will be admitted free. Special activities are planned for kids, and youth-oriented information sheets will be distributed at many of the on site demonstrations. In addition, a farm safety exhibit will be targeted to children.
The Mt. Pleasant show puts a focus on steam engines, but it also includes a wide variety of gas engines, tractors, antique cars and trucks. A unique feature is the show's eight interpretive history museums.
Moore said he's expecting as many as 400 tractors (1939 unstyled or older), 1,000 gas engines, 65 full-size traction steam engines and 30 models, as well as a good number of stationary engines. Toss in electric trolleys, steam trains, horse and mule exhibits, a steam powered carousel, live entertainment (everything from Loretta Lynn to local favorites), and it adds up to one of the nation's premier agricultural shows. Camping is available.
Admission: Five-day pass, $15; one-day pass, $7; children 14 and under, free. For more information, call (319) 385-8937. FC
