November visitors to Florida will find an increased pace in the
tempo of festivals and special events. For fall is in the air and
the many outdoor activities of the month complement the Sunshine
State’s mild and beautiful autumn season.
The sound of fun may be heard throughout the state.
In Fort Lauderdale, a steam-powered locomotive creaks and groans
as it bears passengers on a journey into the past, during the
annual Exposition of Steam, sponsored by the Gold Coast Railroad. A
short journey on the narrow-gauge train sets the mood for the
elaborate display of full-size and scale-model motors and equipment
of the almost-forgotten era of steam.
Enhancing the atmosphere are the permanent displays of the
railroad: the replica of a small town railroad depot, complete with
gingerbread trim, big semaphore signal and telegrapher’s bay
window; and the famous Ferdinand Magellan, private car of the
President of the United States, in which Harry Truman made his
whistle-stop tour prior to the 1948 election.
