• GAS ENGINE RESTORATION

For the first time, a detailed step-by-step guide to stationary gas engine restoration has been written for engine enthusiasts. From start to finish, Peter Rooke's newly revised, easy-to-follow narrative will impress and educate both new and experienced hobbyists with exhaustive coverage of the process.

In 112 pages, Rooke meticulously leads you from stripping an engine through rebuilding each component — from bearings to cylinder head to ignition. Tips along the way cover everything from repairing damaged threads to removing rust and zinc plating.

A new chapter on building your own magneto charger has been added to this newly revised edition of Gas Engine Restoration. Other chapters include information on rebuilding engine carts as well as painting engines, whether applying new paint or preserving old finish. Included are data tables containing reference information such as various bolt head and nut sizes, copper wire sizes and bearing tolerances.

The book has a soft, durable cover and a convenient lay-flat spiral binding that allows you to keep your hands at work while you follow along.

  • A PRICE GUIDE TO ANTIQUE TOOLS, 4TH EDITION

A price guide is only as helpful as its prices are current. With this in mind, the fourth edition of Herbert Kean's A Price Guide to Antique Tools takes its prices from the latest live and Internet auctions as well as private sales. Like previous editions, the guide includes more than 12,000 prices (individual and chart combinations) that represent extraordinary tools, as well as those found in flea markets.

There is an explanation for each tool group that allows the reader to judge the condition of a tool (the most critical of all factors when determining price). A chapter on American wooden planes covers more than 400 makers, each graded with a single value number … a system that is at the same time simple and comprehensive.

To help even more, almost every tool is illustrated with a photograph or line drawing. The section on Internet prices explains the mechanisms of electronic auctions and gives tips for successful bidding. If you have ever wished that you could consult with an expert before investing in a tool, this is the book for you. It puts at your fingertips the knowledge and expertise of noted tool collector and dealer Herb Kean, both in determining current prices and in evaluating condition.

This conversation with one of the pre-eminent figures in farm tractor history features insights that could only be learned from being there. Harold Brock worked intimately with Henry Ford, Edsel Ford and Henry Ford Jr. He personally met Thomas Edison, Harry Ferguson and many other legends of modern invention and industry.

The conversation covers how Ford met Harry Ferguson and, perhaps more importantly, how the Ford design team ultimately dealt with Ferguson. Time is also spent talking about the history of Ford Motor Company and some of the key players like “Cast Iron” Charlie Sorensen, Eugene Farkas, George Sherman and other key engineers at Ford.
