May 2012, Tool A ... can't say I know what it is, but my guess is that those are ball-bearings in those leaves there. By the taper of the stem, I'd guess that the stem rests vertically in a pocket cut into a workbench or anvil (depending on how large this thing actually is), and that the ball-bearings (facing upward) were a rest/support for some sort of long stock as it would get worked in some sort of turning fashion. ... just my guess though ... hope this helps spark some thoughts :)
