Glad to see your publication in our local grocery store in Belle Plaine, Iowa. My dad told many stories from when he was young near Cambridge, Neb., of his uncle’s separator and threshing equipment, spike pitchers in the field, horses on the header barge, sleeping in straw stacks, baths in water tanks, taking down fences to access fields and, of course, the food.
I was raised on a livestock farm in Marshall County, Kan., on the state line. My parents passed away in the late 1970s and I had to give up the place in September 1980 by auction.
Always interested in aviation, I went to school in Sidney, Neb., when I was about 34. I got my A&P (airframe and powerplant) certificate and lived in Iowa City for 12 years. My wife and I attend the best of both worlds on Labor Day weekends: the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and the Antique Airplane Assn. & Airpower Museum Fly-In, west of Ottumwa, Iowa.
