These pictures were taken on Charles Chester’s farm one-half
mile east of Highway 51 and 10 miles south of Lake Michigan, in
Lake County, northwest Indiana.
The engine was run by two men, Mr. Chester and my uncle, Delbert
Young, a very young man who farmed with my grandfather George
right at the turn of the century. The crew also had a third man to
haul water for the engine; he was known as the water boy.
Mr. Chester along with his three sons had a large herd of dairy
cattle, as did my grandfather, all done by hand, no milking
machines.
