As I was reading the article about the Lessmann Power Shovel
(Farm Collector, December 2005) I noticed the machine was
built in Des Moines, Iowa. This sparked an old memory dating back
some 37 years ago to my high school years. Back then, I did odd
jobs in the summer around the Iowa “Great Lakes,” which are located
in northwest Iowa between Milford and Spirit Lake. For several
summers I mowed grass and washed windows for Herb Lessmann, who had
a cottage on West Lake Okoboji. I remember him telling me about his
company in Des Moines. He was really a very nice fellow and, as I
remember, paid me very well for my work.
