this unusual memorial to a loving dog. For many years Shep
accompanied his owner to the railroad station, waiting patiently
for his return from the frequent trips the man took. From one of
these trips, the master, having died, never returned. Shep met
every train at the Fort Benton station for many years, expecting to
see his master’s face. The devoted dog spent the last years of
his life at the station, fed and cared for by railroad employees.
