Buddy Barnes from Newnan, Georgia, Fireman Apprentice, posing just
before leaving for Viet Nam. Buddy is on the Aircraft Carrier
‘USS Intrepid’ and is in the Black Gang that keeps the
boilers going. The ship is equivalent to a large power plant, water
tube boilers and steam turbines. Most of his work is going inside
and keeping the boilers clean and in shape. The Intrepid saw plenty
of action in the Second World War and was hit several times. I
believe she won several Blue Ribbons for outstanding performance in
battle. Note ‘E’ on Buddy’s sleeve (something about
World War II that made the ship famous).

This picture was taken the summer of 1905. It is a Nichols and
Shepard traction engine which was owned by Linville Land and son,
Charlie. They used it for wheat threshing, sawing lumber and also
grinding corn for feeds and meal. At the time the picture was
taken, they were pulling into a barn belonging to Dock Baines at
Fall Branch, Tennessee to thresh grain. The two men on the engine
are Mr. Land and his son, Charlie. The other man is Rev. J. M.
Whitaker, who helped and also a man by the name of Orge McCrary,
who was not present when this picture was taken.

The little cart behind the engine was the water tank and was
pulled by oxen while the engine was in operation. At the time the
picture was taken, the threshing machine was following the engine
being pulled by two yoke of oxen.
